The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has recently published “William Ruser: The Jeweler Who Charmed Hollywood”, exploring the career of William Ruser, famed for his figural jewellery with freshwater pearls.

The book, by Judy Colbert and Peggy Tsiamis, aims to provide a thorough look at Ruser’s contribution to jewellery design and his enduring popularity in the market.

    From Humble Beginnings to Stardom

Ruser’s journey from modest origins to the preferred jeweller of Hollywood’s elite in the mid-20th century is captured in the book. His clientele included names like Elizabeth Taylor and Frank Sinatra. On Ruser’s customer service, the book notes, “Ruser learned a great deal about providing exceptional customer service experience through his employment with the prestigious jewelry firm of Trabert & Hoeffer-Mauboussin.”

Ruser Jewels was located on Beverly Hills’ Rodeo Drive, housing a large workshop and luxurious showrooms. Despite a large staff, “Ruser was his best salesman and his customers would ask to be waited on by Ruser himself,” underscoring his direct engagement with clients. The narrative also touches on the business’s closure in 1969 and its acquisition by Van Cleef & Arpels.

The publication dedicates a section to Cyril and Vera Wood (Cyvra), whose designs significantly contributed to Ruser’s fame. With over 100 images across 125 pages, the book provides a detailed view of Ruser’s contributions to jewellery design.

*William Ruser: The Jeweler Who Charmed Hollywood* is available for purchase through the GIA Store, offering industry professionals a comprehensive look into the life and work of a man who significantly impacted Hollywood and the jewellery world.
